The quote said three days

The quote said three days, the job took five. Nobody recorded it, so the next quote will say three days again.

The quote said three days. The job took five. The crew knows it, the site manager knows it, and yet the next quote, for an identical job, will say three days again.

The gap nobody records

This is not carelessness. The information stays in the field: it travels by phone, in the evening, and stops there. Nothing carries it back to the tool that produced the quote.

The result is mechanical. The jobs that overrun are always the same ones, and they are the ones absorbing everyone else’s margin.

The average lies

On the income statement everything looks fine: overall margin holds. It holds because the good jobs pay for the bad ones. As long as the two are not separated, nothing is corrected · it is compensated.

It is the same illusion as a distributor’s average margin, or a retail brand’s total revenue. An aggregate is always reassuring. Which is exactly why it is useless for deciding.

Closing the loop between the job and the quote

All it takes is for the installer to close the job from their phone, in three taps. The system compares actual duration against quoted duration, and the next quote carries the observed gap.

After a few months it knows your real durations by type of job and by crew. The quote stops being an optimistic estimate and becomes a forecast. That is where margin comes back: not by selling at a higher price, but by no longer being wrong.

The loop is already turning.
