The gap between the target and the result
You had clear targets and thought you knew the way. The results do not follow, and nobody can say exactly where it leaks.
You had clear targets. You thought you knew the way to reach them. And yet the results do not follow, or not at the level expected.
That is exactly where we meet most companies: when the gap widens between what was aimed at and what is obtained, without anyone able to say where it comes from.
Two causes, almost always mixed
Sometimes the path was right but badly executed. Signals did not come up, follow-ups were forgotten, the pipeline was watched from too far away. The intent was sound, the execution was missing.
Sometimes the path itself was wrong, and nobody saw it. For want of a fine enough measure, the company kept accelerating in a direction that led nowhere.
Most often, both at once. And that is what makes the gap so hard to close: you cannot tell whether to correct the move or change the route.
A continuous loss, never counted
It is not a one-off accident. It is a permanent leak, in the background, that triggers no alert because it appears nowhere.
Customers drifting away without a word. Quotes going cold for want of a follow-up. A discount granted three years ago that nobody can justify any more. Considerable time spent re-entering what already exists elsewhere.
Taken one by one, these losses look negligible. Added up over a year, they often exceed the budget you hesitate to spend on fixing them.
Why nobody sees it
Because you would have to be everywhere at once. Behind every situation, to observe what happened, measure the result, and draw the lesson for next time.
Nobody can. Not a leader, not a team, not a consultant passing through. It is a human limit, not an organisational failing.
So the first thing to do is not to correct. It is to measure finely enough to know, at last, whether the gap comes from the path or from the execution.
